The handbook edited by prof. Ebeling is a good resource to introduce the reliability problems.
The book has a mathematical structure, with very detailed demostrations of relations and formulas. However, differently from the main books treating the argument, Ebeling introduces a large number of solved exercises with practical cases.
However, the text, for me, it has two limitations. One minor and one major.
The first one is the absence to references to international standards of reliability (IEC 61508, IEC 61511, EN ISO 13849-1, etc.). But this is not very important.
The second one is most important: at the end of every chapter are suggested a lot of number of exercise WITHOUT solution. The solution manual is not available, for consultants, designers and engineers outside of academia, even for a fee. This is a ENORMOUS limit of the text, because most of the exercises have implications for the solution of technical and practical cases. And without these solutions, the text lacks a very important part, useful for all readers who use it for work, outside the University.

I already had some reliability related books and was intrigued by the claim of this one being more practical info. I didn't really feel this was the case after glancing through the book. I already own Accelerated Testing: A Practitioner's Guide to Accelerated And Reliability Testing by Dodson & Schwab. I found "Accelerated Testing..." more readable and applicable to learning about reliability and various models used in performing accelerated testing. Had the publisher allowed viewing inside the book online, i probably would have figured out it wasn't what it's cracked up to be. Amazon, as always, graciously let me return it.
This is one of the best written reliability books published. It is a great handbook for the practitioner, and an even better book for the novice. It should make a great addition to any Electrical, Mechanical, or Reliability Engineer's bookshelf. If someone is preparing for ASQ's Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) Exam, this is one of the three books they should own. My only complaint is that it does not address R&M of production systems, which is where most other texts fall short.
This book was as syllabus requirement and we did not use it at all during the semester except for one week where we read one chapter out this entire book. For the money spent for it, we sure did not make great use of it. This book was hard to understand because there are just a bunch of words that probably have no meaning if you have no clue what the subject matter is about. The print is extremely small as well. Maybe that is why we did not use it very much in class. However, I am using it as a reference for my thesis as it does contain some good content on reliability. I have been reading it off and on but I will have to tackle the chapters in several settings at a time because if I read too much of it at one time I will find it boring and get nothing out of it. This is a good reference book but I don't recommend it for a syllabus requirement for a semester class if it will not be read from beginning to end.
Though it is really a text book, it is also a great reference book. Problems at the end of the chapter can be worked to help the user grasp the theories and applications the book teaches.
