A portion of this book appeared as "Pack Rat Planet" in the December 1954 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, 1954. Part I. Vincent Coogan pulled at his thin lower lip as he stared at the image of his home planet growing larger in the star ship's viewscreen. Slow streams meandered across the plains. Giant butterflies fluttered among trees and flowers. People walked while reading books or reclined with scan-all viewers hung in front of their eyes. The star ship throbbed as its landing auxiliaries were activated. Coogan felt the power through his feet.

Maybe Brian Herbert, but not Frank.

Earth has become a library planet for thousands of years, a bastion. It's better than any of my first starts, but I can't say that it is quintessentially Frank Herbert. Maybe Brian Herbert, but not Frank.

When a book makes it to you undamaged that says something about the seller.

It isn't Dune, but it's good Herbert. Suffers, unjustifiably, from comparison with better known works. Still a good read for the SciFi devotees.

AWESOME

I got this for my Kindle since I hadn't read it in many years. The story has lately been popping into mind, so I got it and reread it. The story is still great, but the kindle edition has an amazing number of typographical errors, especially in the second half of the book. Most don't detract from the story, but when the character named 'Prue' is referred to as 'True', that's a little confusing!

The story was interesting, and the characters well developed. A good read. The idea of a library plant is interesting and could be the basis for many stories.

Love all of Frank Herbert books
I love the writings of Frank Herbert. This was not as intricate as some of his other writings but I liked it. It is definitely science fiction and of the future genre. Enjoy.Direct Descent
