Discovery is the first installment of the Darkside Trilogy.  The Darkside Universe is a speculative world which tells the tale of what happens in the United Sates of America when the country discovers that African Americans have been secretly living on the backside of the moon since before Neil Armstrong arrived. The story combines politics, intrigue, science and romance into a compelling, character-driven tale that both men and women are praising.  The action begins in a science lab at the University of Chicago and takes the reader through the power corridors of Washington, D.C., an all Black women's college in the Atlanta suburbs, outside Iraq's no-fly zone, and in a secret underground government installation in a remote region of Utah. The characters are varied and three-dimensional, the kinds of people readers have more than likely met in their own lives, who provide the action that drives a plot that's never been read before.

This "Trilogy" is clearly a body of work that is more than ready for the Big Screen. A applaud William Hayashi for presenting a brilliant work of African American science fiction. He is an outstanding writer who knows how to tell a great story with fully developed characters, storyline and sub-plots, major themes and an excellent grasp of the futuristic science and technology interwoven throughout this incredible story. The investigative journey that Hayashi takes you on is steady and methodical, keeping you locked into the story and eager to learn more about these incredible people that have been living (in peace) on the Dark side of the moon for over 40 years. An asteroid on a collision course with Earth is one of the main catalysts that opens the door to discovering the home base of these freedom-loving African Americans living on the moon. Their solitude and mission is disrupted by a world (primarily the United States) hell bent on acquiring the scientific and technological achievements of the brilliant Black scientists.

I started reading this science fiction saga by reading Volume 2 entitled "Conception" (this was not by design but by accident). I just completed Volume 1 "Discovery" and found it to be a great opening to this exciting story. The very next day I received Volume 3 in the mail and was extremely excited about continuing the journey and explorations of the over 2000 brilliant African Americans who came together to literally start a new chapter in human civilization. Like any GREAT story, it takes time and patience to get through the storyline development and to fully appreciate the central characters and their trials and tribulations, and Hayashi demands that you walk this journey with him step by step: each volume is at least 600 pages. Take your time and enjoy the entire journey; it is worth the effort! If you find yourself wanting to read this book rather than watch a great movie, then you will know you are dealing with a masterpiece.

It is NOW time for me to get started on the third and final installment: "CONFRONTATION"!

OUTSTANDINGLY AMAZING! Not since Larry Niven’s – Ringworld, Greg Bear’s – Eon, Roger Zalazny’s Roadmarks or Jack L. Chalker’s – The Well World series have a read something so fresh and innovative that I’m craving and waiting with baited breath for the next installment of The DarkSide Trilogy. William Hayashi has burst upon the Sci-Fi scene demanding that you take notice of his ability with fully realized intelligent characters that the reader gets to learn more about and grow with in each passing chapter. Making no apology for his content Mr. Hayashi grabs the reader and takes them on a ride they can’t help but enjoy as they question consistently hot and controversial topics of the day.
If you’re looking for something New & Refreshing along with a good interweaving plot, The DarkSide Trilogy is for you. I strongly recommend picking up a copy until the ebook is available.

What sets this book about a part from others, within the Sci-Fi realm, is how the African-America's plight is address:

Rather living, tolerating, and many times over, surviving the confines of a western society, a group of brilliant individuals take a bold opportunity to think outside the box.
Decades later, in present times, the world is now waking up to the fact of an thriving melanoid community, with technology far outstriping their own, existing on the other side of the moon. For some it is not an easy pill to swallow; not when generations of inbreed hatred take presidency. For others there is awe, in the presumed unattainable being a long since established reality. Yet for many in power there is a surging fear, of the unknown. "What are their intentions?" The ending of this first installment, of the Darkside Universe, may surprise you.

Phenomenal read! A great story with fleshed out characters. This is book keeps the hard science in science fiction using well researched theories in addition to things that are actually implemented. The story is well thought out and the theme has more than a passing relevancy to what is going on in the real world today. The perspectives illustrated are not what we're used to seeing in most works out there and hopefully this will be made into a cinematic work! I look forward to finishing the rest of the series. Well done Mr. Hayashi!

A bit too much chatter and an obnoxious ending mar an otherwise interesting concept. Will discuss further later. Now onto Conception!

I'm reading this book now and all I can say is wow. What a novel concept. I love sci fi and it's great to find AA authors who are exploring the genre. I didn't give it 5 stars because I'm not done yet but I definitely recommend this novel

Hayashi knows how to grab your interest early on, and keep you turning the pages. This was a fun story, and built around a concept different from anything I've encountered before. There's things here for the techno-geek, the sci fi fan, the action/adventure fan, and the mystery fan. Especially the mystery, as the story unfolds in some very unexpected ways. A highly recommended book.
Discovery is one of the most interesting and novel reads I have ever experienced.
The concepts are unique and the characters are fully developed. The author tackles race and historical context within a masterfully developed fictional world.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading the next and highly recommend adding it to your collection.
