A Ghost Upon Your Path book. Ever since he first visited Ireland with his family twenty years ago, John McCarthy has felt a strong affinity with its people and landscape. Yet in spite of his Irish name, he never thought of himself as remotely Irish. We all have a need to belong, to have a place and people we feel tied to: our family, our house, our hometown, our nation.

A Ghost Upon Your Path has been written following 6 months that John spent in County Kerry in south west Ireland. His objective was largely to finally come to terms with the death of his mother, having not be able to say goodbye to her at the time of her death due to his cruel captivity in Lebanon. His objective was also to trace his own family, who on his father's side, originated in Ireland.

When John McCarthy was released in 1991, his mother had already died of cancer, unaware he was alive. Now McCarthy has published another memoir, A Ghost Upon Your Path, this time about a journey he made earlier this year to Ireland. For years grief and guilt pursued him - until he brought himself to read her own words. Much has happened in his life since Some Other Rainbow - his father's death, his split with Morrell, his subsequent marriage - but, curiously, his new book repeats almost exactly the pattern of the first.
