Baba Amte (1914-2008) was an Indian social activist and advocate for the poor, probably best known for his work at Anandwan, a leper community he founded for healing, rehabilitation and empowerment. This biography is a detailed, heartfelt and joyous tribute to Baba’s fascinating life and work. The author conveys his very soul as well as describing his many projects and his total compassion for humanity. Thoroughly researched and referenced. The author shares a wonderful gift to the world with her remembrance of Baba. Inspiring and wonderfully written! Highly recommended.

I'm terribly biased of course, but I found this book to be absolutely incredible. If you enjoy reading about world-changing mavericks who take the road less travelled, you will love this journey into the heart of Central India. You will meet a man who lived nine lives in one, and achieved more in one lifetime than you can capture in one book. When Neesha embarked on this journey, I really did not believe she would be able to do this. She proved me wrong. My favorite part -- the number of stories she managed to weave into the narrative. This is not just her interpretation, it is collective storytelling where over 100 people she interviewed speak their truth about this breath-taking legacy of love and compassion. One reviewer said, "Truth is sometimes more gripping than fiction" and I agree. Baba Amte may have passed away but his legacy lives on within the pages of Wisdom Song.

This book humanizes Baba, his struggles and emotions from finding a reliable water source to grow food for the Anandwan community besieged with leprosy to the horror of a village that had no females due to selective abortions performed in India. This is a powerful book about a man that inspired people to go beyond their perceived limitations to live fruitful lives. This book makes you grateful for the gifts that the universe has given us and the recognition of our potential.

Neesha's book is a gem! She has clearly completed many, many hours of painstaking research to arrive at the essence of a great soul. Baba Amte is the epitome of compassion: his story deserves to be told again and again by the whole of humanity. This is a spell-binding tome: one to relish! Highly recommended.

Baba Amte, unlike other humanitarian legends of our time, is not well known outside India. But I grew up hearing of Baba's great works. From the introduction till the last page, the author kept me riveted -- because Wisdom Song is so much more than a biography. It weaves in the stories of the leprosy patients Baba treated when society burned them alive or shunned them. He sat by the banks of a river in silent vigil -- against the Indian government and the World Bank. My favorite chapter is the one about Anandwan, which represents social enterpreneurship at a time when that term wasn't even invented... After you read this book, be prepared to contemplate your own legacy. I would definitely say the last section is highlighter-worthy!
