Melnick, Monte A; Meyer, Frank. Monte could have made this book a lurid, cash grab by airing out a bunch of dirty laundry but he kept it classy - sure there were problems but he gives the Ramones the respect they deserve by not trashing their legacy. Think about a sequel Monte, we'd love more of your stories! 235 Borrows.

This book was WAY better than Dee Dee's "Lobotomy" book, although I was hoping for even more behind-the-scenes stories than there were. I think I may have preferred a book only from Monte's perspective instead of different tidbits from the many different people that went into telling this story, but it was fun and interesting. Great cover art for the book. If you are a Ramones fan, you will appreciate this history.

I bought this wonderful book by Monte A. Melnick and Frank Meyer when it was first released. I now probably own half a dozen copies, and to this day I still consider it one of my favorite books, and a valuable resource for Ramones history buffs. It is written largely in quotes by members of the band and people close to the band, so it gives you excellent insight into what everyone was thinking about different situations. It also has a huge wealth of photographs, posters, and other memorabilia that Monte collected over the 22 years he was the first, only and last Ramones tour manager. Monte was there to see it all, and took the time to write it all down in a very high quality book, that is now available in 7 languages. How many books do you know that are available in 7 different languages? Not many! The reason is that this book is a CLASSIC, and it needs to be read by everyone who is a fan of the Ramones and a fan of rock and roll in general. It tells the story of what I consider one of the world's great rock bands and their trials and tribulations through the world. In On The Road With The Ramones you will see things and read things that are not available anywhere else. Buy the download of On The Road With The Ramones! It is one of the greatest rock and roll books ever written.

Essential reading for any Ramones fans. The stories range from hilarious to outrageous to outlandish, and every page offers some perspective on this amazing band's turbulent history. The photos are mostly candid and you feel by the end that you have been through the wringer. It is also a tragic tale of sadness and humanity. Much more than just a tell all rock book, it really gets you thinking.

Since the legendary band's retirement in 1996, there has been a series of books and films exploring the history and influence of the Ramones. One of the best books is On the Road with the Ramones. Written by their road manager, Monte A. Melnick, this book is a warts and all retrospective of one of the hardest working bands in rock and roll. Compiled in a similar fashion to other punk rock books Please Kill Me: An Uncensored Oral History of Punk and American Hardcore: A Tribal History, On the Road with the Ramones collects personal accounts of the band from the Ramones themselves, as well as their girlfriends, crew, family and friends. Throughout the book, Monte provides a unique insider's perspective of the trials and tribulations the band encountered with the promoters, fans, the media and especially with each other. There are chapters devoted to life on the road, the band's relationships with women, internal feuds and drug abuse and mental illness. There are also numerous light-hearted stories that show what a incredibly fun band the Ramones were. The book is richly illustrated with color photographs, posters and memorabilia, much of it never before seen by the public. This book is an absolute must-have for any devote Ramones fan and makes a worthy addition to anyone's collection of rock and roll books.

You don't have to be a Ramones fan or even knowledgeable about them to throughly enjoy this book. It does help, however, to be aware of what life on the road is or might be like in the mad world of rock & roll. With an adequate yet never self-serving elucidation of his own contribution to the Ramones' success and history, author Monte Melnick vividly communicates the trials and tribulations of keeping the band alive for 22 years. Quite frankly I can't understand how he did it without killing one of them along the way. The egos, addictions, immaturity, self absorbtion, sickness and delusion that accompany stardom on any level is destructive at best to the subject individuals, but it may wreak even greater havoc on those around them. Monte was mother hen, father confessor, friend, foe, advisor, fixer-upper, payer-offer, occasional procurer, general factotum and for all intent and purpose, managerial grand wizard to this band. Given the Ramones' personnel changes and highly volatile mix of personalities alone, it seems that without Monte or someone of his character and ability at the helm, this band wouldn't have lasted more than a few years.

While it will be clear to the reader that nobody but Monte Melnick was in a position to write a book like this about the band, it is equally clear that the book isn't about him. It IS about Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, Tommy, C.J., Marky, and Richie and its well constructed oral history covers every aspect of life on the road for each of its members over the course of their 22 long years together. You cannot find a better history or description of that life and those years anywhere. Regardless of preferred genre, I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the history of popular music. It's a page turner and an indispensable addition to the history of rock and roll in the 20th Century.
