I learned piano from these books and now use them to teAch my own students. The method is easy to learn and good for children of all ages (except a really young beginner who would need the early beginner book). I do wish they offered a few more songs before moving on to the next new topic but one can easily supplement with the other books in the line for this purpose. This specific book is a theory workbook. The child practices writing what they are seeing in their lesson book. Very helpful. I wouldn't use the piano lesson book without this book. They should be used in conjunction with each other.

My 2nd grade daughter is enjoying tis book so much and it is such a beautifully illustrated introduction to musical theory. She is using this with her piano lessons but I would use this as a home school resource for teaching music theory on its own as well!

AS a piano teacher, this series of books are great for young beginners who know how to read. Parents will need to help them a bit if they are 1st or 2nd grade, simply because they cannot understand the instructions at that age. By the time a child is 5fth or 6th grade, they usually need books that move a little faster. This is a very thorough, but slow, curriculum. The Theory, Lessons and Technic all work together very well.
lets go baby
I would say it is really only THEORY book. It does not have any ear-training . And I do not know why it has intervals and EVEN CHORD in THIS level! I bought this one book and also the Theory book of Piano Adventures by Nancy Randall. The P Adventures book has ear -training and gives the very easy method of reading notes . I would give the Piano Adventure 5 stars!

not sure if anyone said this, but this book will teach you the basics of the piano, and the music. like what the notes are, fingering, basic things that will help you get used to where you hands are on the piano, and how to play the notes, rhythm, stuff like that. not sure if it can help you self learn, but i know that if you know the basics of the piano, you can probably teach your kid with these books. i recommend getting this book along with the regular paino book its paired with, because it will help the child, or yourself, have a better understanding of the music. this book is meant to be written in, for more a hands on kind a deal. which i know, helps me in some cases :) i wouldnt say im pro or anything, but i would say im up there on the piano. been playing most my life, and learned with the Bastien piano books. bought these to help my 6 1/2 year old. so far hes doing pretty good. and as a tip, as i was growing up, i played the clarinet in junior high, and that helped me play and learn the treble cleft (right hand), as far as the notes, and rhythm, and all. basically saying, if you learn another instrument, it will also help you read the music a little better as well, i know it helped me with my sight reading better :) anyway, i hoped i helped at least someone, sorry for the whole life story :p

I am a beginning piano teacher and I use Bastien books often including these primer books. They are great for children who are fast learners and who need little repetition of a concept before moving on to the next concept. I use the piano the theory books together but then supplement with other exercises for technique development and other books for application of concepts in 'real' music outside of the lesson book. I use these for beginning students in elementary school, but find older beginners benefit from more adult beginner books.

Love all the books from Bastein. It’s like doing Kumon on piano.
