The action portion of the book focuses on how to implement change. Although this book provides some decent insights into the change management process, there are better books for this part of strategic implementation.

The action portion of the book focuses on how to implement change. For example, Kotter's Leading Change is probably one of the best, as is the book Switch by the Heath Brothers.

II am a college professor and teach business courses. I have drawn on the business unit strategy section of this book time and time again to explain one perspective on business unit strategy in my graduate and undergraduate business courses. We analyze companies against the business unit strategy components of goals, product/market focus, core activities and the value proposition that Crossan describes in this book. I also used the section on change repeatedly, particularly the section on the costs and benefits of anticipatory, reactive and crisis change.

I carried the first edition around with me for over a decade and mjust have thrown it out in a move, which bothered me. So, I bought this version of the book to replace it -- it has been that useful to me. The book covers business unit strategy, and corporate strategy, as well as how to develop, assess and select a strategy. It also addresses implementation issues. It's core concept is the Diamond-E framework (google it in Google Images) to see how management preferences, the organization, management preferences and strategy influence each other and should align. The model also indicates strategy links to the environment in which the company competes.

Many of the ideas in the book do not appear to be mainstream. For example, I haven't seen the section of Business Unit strategy in any of the textbooks I have used for introductory and management courses. Yet, I find it the most parsimonious/efficient way of viewing business unit strategy. Anyone who wants a framework for giving an "elevator speech" about what their company does could frame it up using Crossan's definition of business unit strategy.

One feature of the book that I really like is its emphasis on diagrams and figures to get across concepts. These diagrams and figures make the book readable and assist the reader in understanding the various theories and processes quickly.; I recommend this style of writing to my students in their reports, so it is nice to see the same kind of approach in a textbook -- rather than plodding through pages and pages of text.

The action portion of the book focuses on how to implement change. Although this book provides some decent insights into the change management process, there are better books for this part of strategic implementation. For example, Kotter's Leading Change is probably one of the best, as is the book Switch by the Heath Brothers. Kotter is the leading authority on change from Harvard, and the Heath brothers provide a different look at change, with some great ideas about how to create momentum and effect change with few resources.

Nonetheless, I value this book very highly, and consider it one of the timeless books in my collection along with Michael Porters' Competitive Advantage and Competitive Strategy books, Switch by the Heath Brothers, and Leading Change by Kotter.

This is one of the best management books I have ever used. I recommended this to all my colleagues. It really gives a great way to have a better focus on goals and strategy. This focus helps with team goal settings and calling priority as things change

Service was excellent. Book is an absolute bore, but was required for a class so I bought here and saved over 1/2 the price at the University bookstore.
