A Pastor's Sketches is a sobering and challenging reminder that the Holy Spirit is the true agent of conversion. This book is urgently needed today when so much of our evangelism is patterned after current marketing methods. Ichabod Spencer lived those words. A pastor from 1828 to his death in 1854, twenty two of those twenty six years were at one church, Second Presbyterian in Brooklyn, New York. While Mr. Spencer had his faults, one area he excelled at was what I would call 'pastoral evangelism'. We would know little of this, had Pastor Spencer not blessed the Christian world by writing down fascinating narratives of many of his conversations.

I greatly enjoyed this book and all of the different subjects and depth that Dr. Spencer went through to describe and highlight what people struggle with when they begin to look deep within their hearts and wrestle with the truths of Scripture and their need for a Savior. I was amazed that the struggles that people in the 1800's had are the same as we face in the present.

The reason for the four star rating was the poor scan that was done and the lack of editing. Since I did pay for this Kindle edition, I would expect someone to have at least gone through and fixed any typos or punctuation errors. Unfortunately I had to wade through countless errors and at times had to guess at what was being said.

Good book but please fix the errors!

Don't be misled by the title (the subtitle is a more accurate description), and don't be intimidated by the size--it's divided into 77 separate incidents, most of them 3-4 pages, so it's very readable. Spencer (1797-1854) pastored Jonathan Edwards' former church in Northampton, MA and then Second Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, NY. The brief conversations (and some longer narrations) recorded here reflect a wide variety of experiences on the part of people seeking (or avoiding) the claims of Christ. They also display Spencer's remarkable insight in conversing with such people; he has an uncanny ability to target exactly the right issue with which they need to be confronted. The source of that insight is explained in the course of one conversation titled "The Arrow Driven Deeper." When asked how he knew what to say on such short notice to people he'd never met, he replied, "I aim to conspire with the Holy Spirit. If I perceive that any one truth has impressed the mind, I aim to make its impression deeper; because the Holy Spirit has already made that impression, and I would not diminish it by leading the mind off to something else" because "the Holy Spirit can choose the kind of truth that is appropriate to any sinner better than I can." By the same token, if he detected some persistent error that has made its way into their thinking, he aims at attacking (Scripturally) that one error and attempting to weed it out. It is a highly targeted, Spirit-dependent, Scripturally-informed strategy. Of course, not all the conversations end "successfully." But each vignette concludes with some insightful reflection that is derived from the conversation and what it reveals about the human heart and mind, the nature of error or deception, the power of the gospel, etc. Highly instructive and inspirational.

What is most captivating about it is that it is factual. These are real people with real struggles trying to find a real God. What they struggle with may seem off based or unreasonable but when the heart holds on to a wrong idea it is harder to shake than one may think.

The message of the book remains the same for each individual: Come to Christ; give up and leave it up to Him to save you and He will; Don't try to work something up, just come.

"Behold now is the day of salvation" rings through each page.

A little technical for the lay person, but still soooo much to be gleaned from this spirit-filled work!

Honestly one of the most thoughtful and encouraging books towards guiding concerned souls towards the love and grace God has though Pastor Ichabod Spencer. He shows such love and humility towards each individual he speaks of and it shows just a small amount of how loving God is.

In Pastors Sketches we get to read dialogue between a Pastor and troubled brethren. A lot of issues many people deal with are given a great deal of perspective. It's definitely worth adding to the book shelf.

this guy is brilliant, you have to enjoy the older language and critical thinking
While written so long ago it is still an excellent read. This Pastor applied the Word of God very effectively.
