War and Peace is a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy, published serially, then in its entirety in 1869. It is regarded as one of Tolstoy's finest literary achievements. The novel chronicles the French invasion of Russia and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society through the stories of five Russian aristocratic families. Portions of an earlier version, titled The Year 1805, were serialized in The Russian Messenger from 1865 to 1867, then published in its entirety in 1869.

In this preface he outlines his project: to start in classical times and move up through Roman times in a first volume; then proceed with three following volumes through the middle ages, the renaissance and terminate in the 19th century.

Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes. But I warn you, if you don't tell me that this means war, if you still try to defend the infamies and horrors perpetrated by that Antichrist-I really believe he is Antichrist-I will have nothing more to do with you and you are no longer my friend, no longer my 'faithful slave,' as you call yourself! But how do you do? I see I have frightened you-sit down and tell me all the news.

This book can be read on more than one level. The author was a follower of Gandhi and participated in non-violent direct action against the British. He wrote this book about non-violent direct action as a thesis in the United States. It was published in 1939. CORE turned parts of this book into a pamphlet to teach Civil Disobedience to the African American community before the late Martin Luther King, Jr. arrived on the historical scene. Above all else, what I like about this book is that it teaches one how to practice non-violent direct action.

War with Scotland and France. The English army was experienced through its wars in Wales and in Scotland. These books were for use in private prayer and dealt with the death of Jesus Christ, the lives of the Saints and the Virgin Mary. England's wish to control Scotland had suffered a major setback in 1314. Many of the English had been killed, and Edward II himself had been lucky to escape. After other unsuccessful attempts England gave up its claim to overlordship of Scotland in 1328. It had learnt the value of being lightly armed, and quick in movement.
