To Alice and Whitney Darrow. Melissa removed hers from her cold hands and added them to the heap

To Alice and Whitney Darrow. Part one. Chapter 1. The damp and wrinkled gloves lay in a little heap on the hall table, where they had been dropped in gestures of complete desolation. Melissa removed hers from her cold hands and added them to the heap. She stood a moment and looked emptily down at the gloves, lying one on top of the other, and they seemed to be external manifestations of her own stupefied hopelessness.

Though the book was published in 1948, it’s theme is still true today. I would recommend it to every reader.

If you like Taylor Caldwell, you will love "Melissa." It is about a selfish, devious man who uses his wife and children to make himself look good. In saying that, of course, he looks good only to himself as everyone else sees him as the lazy, selfish, egotistical man that he is. Only his daughter, Melissa, sees him as he wishes her to see him and she adores him, thinking he is intelligent and wise, not realizing that he is using her writing and publishes it as his own. When finally she does see the truth, she understands the man she married (the publisher of her father's books that she felt forced to marry even though she profoundly hated him), deeply loves her and she almost lost him in her false worship of her demented father.

This Is a novel I have read many times since I first dicovered it many years
ago. It was the first book I had ever read by the late taylor Caldwell and
since then I have read all of them at least once(with the exception of 2).
Melissa is strange and Gothic in many ways, and yet it is heroic too with it's twisted love story. I won't say any more about the contents of the story, except if you haven't read it before read it now, you'll love it!!
Thanks Amazon for virtually completing my library of her works.

This was a book I read when I was much younger. I was pleased to find it as good a read now.

I read this book many years ago and was happy to find it in hardback until I opened the package. The stench was unbearable. I put it in a zip-lock bag with loads of baking powder for months, but it still smelled. A waste of money. I'll hope for a reprint or an e-book.

I enjoyed the book very much. It became a bit tiresome regarding Melissa and her father.

I haven't read this book yet as summer is so busy. If the book is by Taylor Caldwell I know I will like it. She has been one of our great writers and I've read most of her books. When I start reading them I have a hard time putting them down.
This the story of Melissa Upjohn and her fathers vicious attempt, from the time she is a child, to destroy her soul, her mind, and her future. Melissa must succeed in overcoming this evil which she has never suspected while trying to keep her marriage together. She must also endure the plotting of her sister in law, Arabella, and her own sister Phoebe.
Once again the "innocent" trait is strong in this book as in "Ceremony of the Innocent", but I assure you there is no formula that Taylor Caldwell uses. This book, though it had a similar theme, was unique from the others. Overall, it is a good book, and I believe those who read it will like it. Though it is not my favorite of Taylor Caldwell's, it is definitely a good story and well written at that.
