Adhemar of Monteil, eleventh century Bishop of le Puy, fully lived a life that seems full of contradictions to "modern" eyes. On the one hand, the Bishop enjoyed high church status: the Pope himself convened a general council of the Catholic Church from Adhemar's seat of Le Puy in 1095. That Council declared the first Crusade, in which Adhemar participated at the highest levels. Though the Latin text of Salve, Regina does not follow any standard poetic form, both text and music proceed in a clear and potent fashion. The chant opens by hailing Mary as "mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope"; it is to her whom all of the "banished children of Eve" turn for hope.

The "Salve Regina", also known as the "Hail Holy Queen", is a Marian hymn and one of four Marian antiphons sung at different seasons within the Christian liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. The Salve Regina is traditionally sung at Compline in the time from the Saturday before Trinity Sunday until the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent. The Hail Holy Queen is also the final prayer of the Rosary.
