How can anyone describe this book? It isn't a parable, a fairy story, or a poem, but rather a mixture of all three. It is beautiful and it is comic. It is philosophical and it is cheery. What we suppose we are trying fumblingly to say is, in a word, that it is Thurber. Littlejack has a map that indicates the existence of a treasure on a far and lonely island, and Black has a ship to get there.

I bought this book to get an original copy of Memorial. He could have been writing about my poodle (now passed on) and that short bit captured Mimi so well that it brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat every time I read it. He captured that wonderful dog so well that I had to have the book.

No disappointments in this wonderful little book. It's James Thurber at his best. There's a chuckle or two on every page and if you're a dog lover, you'll love the book even more!

This is a classic collection of stories about all different sorts of dogs by Thurber. Some of the language is dated, but these stories are gems.
They make me both laugh and cry. There is a series of stories about Standard Poodles, a story about a Pit bull Thurber had as a boy, and several stories about a Scottie named Jeanie - all are favorites of mine. The story about Albert Payson Terhune's collie that "committed suicide" is funny in a dark way, and his tribute to The Bloodhound is both funny and informative.

Too bad so much of Thurber's writings and cartoons are no longer in print. Love them.
