Landscapes of the Spirit is an absolutely ravishing & glorious book of photography by William Neill. There is a zen-like quality to what Mr. Neill has chosen to focus on in his choice of the landscape and the light in the photos in this book. This is an experience that is: SPIRITUAL.

The sights and sounds of families moving their homes, farms, and businesses to the fledgling community exemplified the spirit of commitment, sacrifice, and cooperation that citizens of Lubbock continue to display. Today, 250,000 people call Lubbock home, and it remains the socioeconomic center of the Llano Estacado.

Landscape of the Spirits is the first book to cover these ancient images and is one of the most comprehensive treatments of a rock art location ever published. It conveys the range of different rock art elements and compositions found in the South Mountains-animals, humans, and geometric shapes, as well as celestial and calendrical markings at key sites-through accurate descriptions, drawings, and photographs.

In the spirit of Billy Collins’ poem Horizon, the book explores intersection of accordion & tunnel books w/ a set of 6 attached frames that produce different effects when folded into & extended out of the box. Each section suspends an acetate page that floats 2 lines of Collins’ poem. The painting in the box’s interior reflects the poem’s final 2 lines: or standing on the ledge of a winter beach/watching light in the water, light in the air.
