The Countryside Around You. May Theilgaard WATTS Awesome book especially since I live where May Watts lived and worked. She had a very eloquent writing style. May Theilgaard WATTS. May Theilgaard Watts, the distinguished naturalist, recreates the history of many regions by their revealing plant life. In every chapter, she describes a different location - a neighbor's yard, a forest in the Great Smokies, a mountain top and other sites. In each instance, she explains the plants she sees and what they mean, skillfully building up evidence for a picture of the place's past. Awesome book especially since I live where May Watts lived and worked. It is sad, though, to think that much of what she described is already gone from our landscapes.
May Theilgaard Watts was a poet, artist, gardener, and above all, a teacher. May was born to Danish parents in Chicago, on May 1, 1893. Her first teaching job was in a one-room schoolhouse. At the start of the school year, she would take a train out to a rural school district, where she lived with a farmer's family.

May Theilgaard Watts (1893 – 20 August 1975) was an American writer, illustrator, and teacher. Watts was the daughter of Danish immigrants. While working at the arboretum, she authored several books and guides that helped nonscientists to interpret the landscape. Her 1957 Reading the Landscape was among the most widely read and used for decades by educators. Watts also led efforts to establish the Illinois Prairie Path on an abandoned railroad line. Inspired by the public footpaths of Britain and by the Appalachian Trail in the eastern United States, she believed Midwestern residents needed similar recreational trails.
May Theilgaard Watts was an amazing lady. I think a lot about this illustration from May Theilgaard Watts’ 1975 book Reading the Landscape of America. Studied at the University of Chicago under Dr. Henry Cowles, taught for years at the Morton Arboretum, and led the fight to found the first rail-to-trail path in America, the Illinois Prairie Path. My hometown hero, I definitely want to grow up to be her. chase-prairie.
