Soo T. One of the most important lessons I learned from my early experience teaching these courses is that many of the students come into these courses with some degree of apprehension.

Suitable for majors and non-majors alike, the text uses an intuitive approach that teaches concepts through examples drawn from real-life situations from students' fields of interest. In addition, insightful Portfolios highlight the careers of real people and discuss how they incorporate math into their daily professional activities. Numerous exercises, including a Diagnostic Test, ensure that students have a concrete understanding of concepts before advancing to the next topic.

Soo Tan’s APPLIED CALCULUS. I used Tan's book to help me prepare for university level calculus - to revise pre-calculus algebra and become familiar with basic calculus concepts such as limits, derivatives, integrals etc. Tan's text and examples are very clear - I rarely had to refer to other texts to try and understand what was being said - and the exercises are very helpful, just a shame only half the answers (to odd questions) are given with the book. A good resource if you are trying to teach yourself basic calculus.

We used this text book in an NYU continuing education program. The course was designed as a refresher course for potential MBA applicants. I was taking it because we truly use calculus in the analytics of our systems at work.

This is a great text book. The illustrations are terrific. The problem sets are very good as they truly use real-world problems and examples. The instruction is crisp, without excessive theoretical wanderings.

One of the best scientific and engineering texts I have used.

CON: The enclosed CD ROM does not work with the Mac OSX operating system, and although I contacted customer support, they did not have plans to make the software OSX compatible. :-(

Great book to use when trying to grasp mathematics. Very understandable and short when explaining the process of the equation.

My only gripes would be:

1) limited explanations (at least from my point of view) Each section is only 10 or so pages in length and with only about 4 or so extended examples.

2) I would like if there were more review exercises.

Also, if there was an online component, that would be very helpful.

I wish I knew about the bad smell that was hiding in this book. I wonder what caused the smell but I had a hard time reading the book due to the stink. Other than that the delivery and price was good.

This book is awesome because you can buy a used hardback for around 30$. The paperback books were way more expensive. The only difference I have found is that this copy has a different cover then most, but the pages and problems all line up. My book was used, however, it is in great condition without writing. There wasn't an access code with it, which I didn't need for my class anyway, but just so you know. The access code is only in new books so ask your teacher if you need one.
