Great book, very helpful to get through a difficult time. Some counties do handle things differently, so it is not one size fits all.

My experience was that it did no good to cancel deceased person's credit cards, which was recommended in the book. They never acknowledged receipt of the letter, although I sent a self addressed stamped envelope. They still kept credit lines open and kept sending credit card checks and statements. Finally, after three years, I received a letter from one company stating that they were closing the account for lack of use. Really, what took them so long? I called and wrote them! Shishhh!

Ah, but I digressed, it was a great helpful book. Even if you are not going to handle a probate yourself, I'd recommend this!

Better yet....have your loved ones make a trust.

A life saver!! It seems that nowadays there are NO lawyers willing to help you if you do not have a will and need to go to Probate...unless you have property and/or estate with a value of $500,000.00 +. So this is THE BOOK that you will need. You have to read this book. This is the book that will walk you through it, step by step. Make sure you have a notebook, and a highliter as you read. In the back there are the necessary forms that you will need to complete and this wonderful book even walks you through filling those forms out for the most part.

Yes, that is why I say a LIFE SAVER!! It is a thick book to read but I also learned that usually you don't have to do this sort of thing in a rush and no matter what YOU CAN DO THIS!!

Good Luck, this is a great book.

This book was a godsend. I was able to close my dad's estate by following every page of this book. Be meticulous, and you too can do this.

For someone that knows NOTHING about probate, this book was a tremendous help at a time when I had beyond enough tragedy and drama in my life. I'm younger than 40 and was dealing with the after affects of losing someone who didn't have a living trust or will, so I was forced to learn about the process. The people at the courthouses are ridiculous and worthless for help and any resources they recommend are just as bad or want tons of money for things that you can find in this book. this book is worth every penny and then some. the forms are awesome and explanations are easy to understand or easy enough to get you started in the right direction. If you are at all considering going at this on your own, this is the book to guide you. Good luck!

I can't say enough about Nolo books ........ they break things down into layman's language. An excellent book. (By the way, we started the probate process in California BEFORE buying this book, & now cannot change horses in the stream so to speak. If we had it to do over, hiring an attorney is the ONLY way to go!!! Nothing about this process is consumer friendly, & EVERYTHING issued or discussed by the court is impossible to understand. The cost of an attorney is more than worth it.

If you need to go through the Probate process, this book is a fantastic resource. It doesn't have specific county differences, but does help answer key questions, guide one through the probate process, and provide invaluable examples.
The book "How to Probate an Estate in California" by Julia Nissley is a comprehensive explanation on the proper methods to utilize to settle both simple and complex estates. Because I found it informative and well organized, it is an excellent reference source. With reference books, along with a comprehensive table of contents, the index section is very important to me. It was in the reference section, I was able to immediately go to the section of the book relating to Ex-Parte filings. Trying to understand Ex-Parte procedures is the initial reason for me to buy the book. But there is so much more information on how an estate should be properly probated through the courts.
