My son read this book as part of a book club. He enjoyed it thouroughly. It gave us an opportunity to talk about a different culture. This is a great story for teaching how something as small as a grain of rice can earn a farmer a marriage to the princess, and a kingdom. Multiplication is used in the book, and can spring into a math lesson for teachers and parents alike. It is most likely to interest 4th and 5th grade children.

I was lucky enough to know this author, and watched this book come together. It's a wonderful story of love and mathematics. It's a great book for reading more text between illustrations, the storyline more complex. Ms. Pittman is an incredible artist, and the illustrations here are exquisite.

I bought this book to read to my daughter when she was just four, we read it many times. Now, at age 9 she reads this book on her own. She loves that it is not a cheesy Disney princess story and loves how clever and focused the main character is.

This was one option for our first grade summer reading assignment and we were able to read it in one sitting. My almost seven year old didn't quite understand the whole story, BUT the story itself was a great one, about getting ahead by working hard and using one's wits. I would recommend for probably third grade and up. Part of the story hinges on the doubling of numbers, so also great for applying math skills. Overall a fun little story.

This is one of the most clever stories I've ever read! Can't wait to share it with my granddaughters.

Story was what I needed for my math class. The quality of the book's cover and pages was a bit low.

I thought it was a very good book. It only took me 20 minutes . Why i like it is because it is a short and simple book . I also like that it is about a clever young man.My favorite part of the book is when the emperor of china tells Pong Lo he can ask for anything. I loved Pong Lo's clever response.
The story is great, quite enjoyable to read with our son. I am disappointed with the binding, it's basically a paperback book with hard covers. Not good quality paper for the text block at all, not sure it's worth it buying the hardcover if the inside pages will yellow and turn brittle over time like paperbacks do.
