Reddell, who grows roses in California for the cut-flower trade, soothes the fears of novice rose growers by walking . It is basic common sense advice and instruction. When ever I read through it I feel like I am out in the garden with the author going over the facts of rose keeping.
Reddell, who grows roses in California for the cut-flower trade, soothes the fears of novice rose growers by walking them through a season of care of this demanding but rewarding plant. Arranged by season, his book dispenses advice on choosing, planting, pruning, watering, and feeding roses to obtain maximum growth and bloom. The author owns Garden Valley Ranch and wrote "The Rose Bible" and "Growing Good Roses".

I have never grown roses before so was equal parts nervous and excited about the whole thing. Granted, the book is almost 20 years old and could be a little behind on the modern hybrids, but as a basic introduction to rose care, it seems pretty solid to me. The author does a good job of explaining what kind of care is needed and when throughout the year, how to select roses for your area, and even gives some history behind the "War of the Roses" concerning rosarians' tendency to either favor heirloom roses or modern hybrids and why.
