A dark comic novel about life, love, pain, nursing, and being gay, this book takes you on a rollercoaster ride through the on-and-off duty life of a gay male nurse in the early 1980s before AIDS became omnipresent. It tells how he wants to make a difference with his life by helping those in need.

The kitchen was empty, as were the toilets. He won’t have left,’ said Tracey, as we reconvened. He must be around the ward somewhere. For my wife and kids. The stories described in this book follow my progression from an inexperienced nurse to a relatively effective professional. To protect confidentiality, some parts are fictionalised, and all places and names are changed, but nonetheless they remain an honest reflection of my experience working as a male nurse over the past 16 years – surprising as that might come to be! Who am I? I am just your everyday, run-of-the-mill nurse, with a unique story to tell.

I felt a pang of guilt thinking the view was even better than what I was used to back in New Zealand.

As a nurse with 23 years experience - some of my earlier years happening during the same time period as the authors. I can totally relate to many of the scenes and situations Steele found himself in. From being the only male nurse in the hospital, the hilarious circumstances he found himself embroiled in, and the interactions with dorky interns and residents that were "clueless." What a great read, good plot with just the right amount of gay style thrown in for good humor. I'm glad to see the author did NOT make fun of his patients, but helped the reader to see the humor in the circumstances surrounding the patient. Steele is my kind of old fashioned nurse - warm, caring and compassionate with just the right about of "oomph" to control the situation every nurs find themselves in!

Read this book, it should be required reading in the same vein as the novel "House of God," by Samuel Shem - which dealt with the trials and tribulations of residents in training! Good job Mr. Steele - you rocked my world, and brought back many fond memories!

Thoroughly enjoyed this Book and the Authors second Book. Loved his 'sense of humor as well as his empathy and dedication shown to his career. Totally, admire and respect his honesty and so very happy that he found true love. What a brave and remarkable Man, to have shared his 'secrets' and being upfront about his sexuality. Brilliant read, that will make you laugh and cry and keep you wanting to know more. Wish him and his Partner all the very best and a future filled with continued, love, health and happiness.

This was an amazingly entertaining book. I read it within a day. I have seen some reviews criticize this book as if it were a non-fiction book. This book is a fictional book, and is purely for entertainment. That being said, there are some true elements of how male nursing really is. The only reason I didn't give the book a 5 star rating is because of the poor use of grammar mechanics throughout the book.

interesting at times..it helped to pass the time when sitting in the unit all night...slow to begin with but it does pick up some.

I have been come, plating becoming a nurse and reading this book as well as book two makes me want todo just that talking to seasoned nurses and reading this book I still with the nursing profession was like this still.
Perhaps the book should have been titled, "Chicken or Feathers". A line the author uses quite often throughout the book. The author could have just reapeated the phrase over and over for a page or two solid. This "novel" reads like low quality soap opera crap. I'm gay, I'm male, and I'm a RN; I was expecting something more organic, true to life. This story so did not deliver. There were often typographical errors in the text which helped to contribute to the overall sophomoric effect of the writing. This book was a sweet waste of my time.
