First published in 1989, Heather Has Two Mommies is a children's book written by Lesléa Newman with illustrations by Diana Souza. This ground-breaking novel was one of the first pieces of LGBTQ children's literature to garner broad attention. While the book is often noted as the first lesbian picture book, Jane Severance's book, When Megan Went Away, also has lesbian characters and debuted ten years before Newman's.

She has two arms, two legs, two eyes, two ears, two hands, and two feet. Heather also has two mommies. Ships from and sold by White Box Books.

Originally self-published in 1989, Heather Has Two Mommies became the first title in Alyson's newly formed Alyson Wonderland imprint in 1990. The simple and straightforward story of a little girl named Heather and her two lesbian mothers was created by Newman and illustrator Diana Souza because children's books that reflected a nontraditional family did not exist, but a firestorm of controversy soon ensued. Attacked by the religious right, lambasted by Jesse Helms from the floor of the . Senate, and stolen from library shelves, it was an uphill battle for Heather

Heather Has Two Mommies book. the story of Heather's conception and birth is gone) and brand new watercolor and gouache illustrations by Laura Cornell. A lovely book with beautiful pictures and an important story well told. It has been a regular request at bedtime for the last six months from my two three and four year old daughters. Heather also has two mommies, Mama Jane and Mamma Kate. They like it because it is a good story with good characters, simple concepts that make sense to them, words that read well and pictures that appeal. I like it for all those reasons and also because even though they have a mummy and a daddy I want them to know that lots of other kinds of family are OK too.

Newman, Lesléa; Souza, Diana, il. When Heather goes to playgroup, at first she feels bad because she has two mothers and no father, but then she learns that there are lots of different kinds of families and the most important thing is that all the people love each other.

This is a classic and a great book to expand the knowledge and understanding of different families by children. My wife and I have both read this book to children in the public and church schools. I think it will be as relevant 25 years from now as it is today. Expect some kickback from some parents if you read this in a public school class or donate it to a public or school library.

This book is perfect for those who want to expose their kids to different types of families. Our kids were so happy to see a family like their own, with two moms. Bonus: it is a great way to get your kids open to the idea of going on their own to pre-school. The only downside was the shipping time. This book is worth the wait, though!

Great book to help children of lesbian moms understand their families.

However, I think all children should be read this book to understand all families. All children should be educated on all different families.

Several of the one-star reviews here refer to a different edition of this book. This edition (10) does not have anything about artificial insemination (to appease those who were offended). It is just a simple story showing lots of different families... not very in depth, not much to it, but a nice, "feel good" story line. I did not see ANY overt sexuality or "inappropriate" topics at all, as was mentioned by one or two of the other reviewers. I have not seen other editions so I cannot comment about those.

My only objection to this book is that the two 'mommies' in this book seem to go with the stereotypes of lesbian couples by much of society. Not every 'couple' has one member looking more masculine than feminine. Maybe an updated version for our present society could be considered.
