When newswoman Britt Shelley wakes up in bed with the handsome and hard-partying Jay Burgess, a rising star detective in the Charleston PD, she remembers nothing of how she got there...or of how Jay wound up dead.

Five years earlier, Jay was a hero of a disastrous fire at Charleston's police headquarters, which would have been even deadlier if not for the bravery of Jay and three other city officials who led others to safety. Firefighter Raley Gannon, Jay's lifelong friend, had been assigned to investigate the fire, but the investigation ended in a scandal that shattered Raley's world, and forced him to surrender the woman he loved and the work to which he'd dedicated his life. For five years his resentment has festered, but he was helpless to set things right. That changes when he learns of Jay's shocking death.

As suspicion against Britt Shelley mounts, Raley realizes that the newswoman might be his only chance to get personal vindication -- and justice for the seven victims of the police station fire. But there are powerful men who don't want to address unanswered questions about the fire, and will go to any lengths to protect their reputations. As Raley and Britt discover more about what happened that fateful day, they realize that they're not only chasing after the truth but running for their lives. Smoke Screen is Sandra Brown's most intense novel yet.

Very interesting character development from the bizarre to the staunchly politically correct. While I found the story to be very entertaining the telling got a bit sluggish at times, thus the "lost star". I am a big Sandra Brown fan and this is not her finest work...Hippie Bob

I was hooked from the first paragraph and couldn't put it down. Sandra Brown puts more twists and turns into her novels than a roller coaster!

Sandra Brown has such a knack for creating strong, convincing characters. The good characters are really good, and the bad ones are really, really bad! But you don't forget them. The good or the bad.

But sometimes, and this is where her talent kicks in, you don't know which is which until the end.

This holds true in Smoke Screen. I kept trying to figure out "Whodunnit?" and I couldn't.

Firefighter, Rayley Gannon, needs to find out who set him up to take a fall that destroyed his life. Was it one of his childhood friends? Was it someone on the police force? And what makes it even more difficult is the fact that he can't remember parts of the night that his "fall" took place.

Then newswoman, Brit Shelley, who had helped bring Rayley to his public demise five years earlier, finds herself in the same situation that Rayley had been in. She woke up beside a dead policeman and can't remember what happened the night before.

Were the two situations coincidental? Or were the same people behind both?

SMOKE SCREEN, an action novel by Sandra Brown. Jay Burgess, a 25-year Charleston, SC, veteran detective who has terminal cancer asks his friend and broadcast journalist, Britt Shelley, to meet him for an after work drink at the Wheelhouse Bar. He tells Britt that he has a bombshell story he wants to discuss with her. They later walk to Jay’s nearby townhouse where it is quieter and they can talk. The next morning Britt wakes up in bed next to Jay’s cold body; she has no memory of what happened after having only one glass of white wine. Suspecting she was given something similar to a date rape drug she takes to the media to explain what she thinks happened. Reading about Britt’s experience, Raley Gannon, a disgraced local fire investigator who lost his job and fiancé due to a similar experience five years before, decides he needs to discuss his own experience with her. From here on out, the story has more ups and downs than a ping pong ball in a bingo machine. Brown is skillful at leading the reader through double and triple endings. You are led to believe the incident you have just read is the grand finale only to discover it is simply the beginning of a series of grand finales. Brown is a master of suspense. She has successfully transitioned from romance novels to the genre of rugged mysteries always with steamy sex scenes. In Smoke Screen, Brown exploits a corrupt Charleston police department. Having read a couple dozen Brown books, she amazes me as to how she continually comes forth with fresh and exciting plots.
I give Smoke Screen a big 5-star rating.

Britt Shelley is not having a good week. When Jay Burgess, an old hook-up, calls and says he has something to share with her, TV reporter Britt is eager. What she doesn't expect is to wake up the next morning without her memory and with Jay Burgess' dead body next to her. Given that he is a homicide detective and one of the four heroes of the police station fire some years earlier, the police are very suspicious about Britt's story.

Before she can convince the police that she is also a victim, she is kidnapped by Raley Gannon. Raley was a fire department arson investigator and Jay's best friend. He was investigating the fire at the police department when he went to a party at Jay's and woke up next to a dead girl who overdosed on cocaine. He also suffered from a memory loss. The ensuing investigation ruined his reputation and cost him his job and fiance. He has been brooding in a cabin in the woods and plotting revenge. When he hears Britt's story, he decides that together they can find out what happened and get both their lives back.

The story was well-written and very suspenseful. It was filled with false friends, betrayals, and danger from assorted hired killers. Britt and Raley have a large number of suspects and no one they can trust. They are on the run from both the police and the hired killers. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this story.

This was the first Sandra Brown book that I've read and I must say I was no at all disappointed. This book had me from beginning to end and it wasn't until halfway in that I began to put some pieces together. This was a great book, with a great plot. I will definitely be reading more of the authors books!
This was a good one. I'm not a huge Sandra Brown fan, but I'm not sure why not - this book grabs you from the first chapter and keeps you hanging on. It's one of those that you find yourself saying, "Just one more chapter and then I'll go to bed. Okay, just one more..."
