Isabel Allende always revives one’s faith in the intoxicating power of sheer old-fashioned storytelling. Allende is a skilled storyteller who works like a miniaturist. She captures whole lives with the briefest of lines. What is most admirable about this collection is Allende’s ability to portray a world in which the ordinary and the miraculous, the natural and the supernatural, the political and the particular not only co-exist but actually affect one another. Jane Urquhart, Quill & Quire. In her world, the scales of destiny achieve a rough balance.

More critical acclaim for Isabel Allende’s Eva Luna. A dense, opulent novel. Her best work yet. -Library Journal. Isabel Allende is a prodigious fabulist, weaving extraordinary tales. Elegant, mischievous. Village Voice Literary Supplement. In Eva Luna, Allende widens her range. A rambling, racy, often comic tale. Cleveland Plain Dealer

Eva Luna is the daughter of a professor’s assistant and a snake-bitten gardener-born poor, orphaned at an early age, and working as a servant.

As Eva tells her story, Isabel Allende conjures up a whole complex South American nation-the rich, the poor, the simple, and the sophisticated-in a novel replete with character and incident, with drama and comedy and history, a novel that will delight and increase her devoted audience.

Eva Luna is a novel written by Chilean novelist Isabel Allende in 1987 and translated from Spanish to English by Margaret Sayers Peden. Eva Luna takes us into the life of the eponymous protagonist, an orphan who grows up in an unidentified country in South America.

Isabel Allende now ranks as one of the world's most beloved authors. Lying in bed with Eva Luna, he asks her to tell him a story. In 1988, she introduced the world to Eva Luna, in a novel of the same name that recounted the adventurous life of a poor young Latin American woman who finds friendship, love, and some measure of worldly success through her powers as a storyteller. A treasure trove of brilliantly crafted tales, the book showed us once again why "Eva Luna" and her much-celebrated creator have won such a large and devoted readership. We begin with Rolf Carle, the European refugee, journalist, and lover who figured so largely in "Eva Luna.

What a captivating little treasure this is! Written by Isabel Allende, this is the fantastical story of Eva Luna, a poor child living in an unnamed South American country who is orphaned at a young age and learns to rely on her wits and love of words and storytelling to survive. The motley and bizarre companions she meets on her way to adulthood could only populate a novel—a professor who embalms corpses so well that they never decay, a Lebanese immigrant with a harelip who loves her like a daughter, a hardened guerrilla fighter who becomes her tender lover, a transvestite who teaches her table manners. And the list goes on!

This book has everything. It will make you cry. And laugh. And roll your eyes. But most of all, it is a spellbinding and magical story written in prose that is almost poetical in its beauty and flow. Isabel Allende is a genius.

Great novel. Read years ago and lost the old copy so I purchased a new one. The new cover illustrations are pretty bland but Allende is a highly imaginative and almost lyrical writer. Fans of Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez (R.I.P) and Paulo Coelho may like this author.

Eva Luna is the first book I've read by Isabel Allende. She is an excellent writer. Her descriptions make it easy to put oneself in the settings. I had the feeling that Eva and Rolf would end up together because their family lines were followed in the beginning of the book...but it took a lot of situations and adventures to get them together.
I was most impressed with her descriptions of living conditions of the different locations and the different people in the story. Very well written. I would recommend it for anyone who likes a good story with quality writing.

I am about 30% through the book. It is enjoyable but at this point it has not impressed me nearly as mush as other books by Isabel Allende. I have read several others...La Casa de Los Espiritus, La Suma de Los Dias, and La Isla Bajo el Mer that I have liked more. But I may have a different story by the time I finish. I am a fan of Isabel Allende and I plan to read everything that I can get of hers available on Kindle. This woman could write about anything and make it interesting. Spanish is not my first language so I read rather slowly. But reading on the Kindle with easy access to the dictionary is fantastic

EVA LUNA: A NOVEL is a wild and inventive ride that lures the reader, much like a moth to a flame. Exotic and enticing, the vivid storyteller—Eva Luna—conquers the harsh realities of life for herself and others through the creative power of her imagination.

So colorful and precise, her writing transports the reader the the center of the story, as if a part of it. It's hard not to loose yourself in her stories only to be suddenly awakened as you turn the last page.
It was good to read about the character that was telling the story in The Stories of Eva Luna which I think is a better book. Don't get me wrong, I do love this book, but I am IN love with Stories of Eva Luna.

This book seems to be building characters for the first 9/10ths. Then, the action happens. It wasn't a page turner until this story started but still a wonderful read.
