One of the best Plaidys I've read so far, the story is both moving and involving. Plaidy can introduce over a dozen characters without making it seem too many. She brings each one to life, even as some of them are so outlandish you wonder if they could ever have existed (the story is based on a true happening). At each new twist in the plot, I could honestly say I didn't see it coming, at least not quite in that way.

Hibbert's last Jean Plaidy book The Rose Without a Thorn was published posthumously. Gerald G Swan published the first Jean Plaidy book in 1945 but every one after that was published by Robert Hale. Hibbert also wrote four non-fiction books under the pseudonym Jean Plaidy. The first, A Triptych of Poisoners (1958), was a collection of short biographies of poisoners: Cesare Borgia, Marie d'Aubray and Edward William Pritchard. Melisande obeyed, and the summons was answered by a maid who was asked by Fenella to find either Miss Clotilde, Miss Lucie or Miss Genevra, and send her along. In a short time there was a knock on the door and there entered one of the most beautiful girls Melisande had ever seen. She was fair-haired and her eyes were a startling blue; she had a small piquant face and a slightly tiptilted nose; while she was slender there was a hint of the voluptuous in her figure; and there was about her an air of suppressed amusement.

Legendary historical novelist Jean Plaidy begins her tales of Henry VIII's queens with the story of his first wife, the Spanish princess Katharine of Aragon.

A wonderful blend of history and romance with drama. Even Tamar's mother believed that the child had been forced on her by the Devil when, against her judgement, she was persuaded to attend a midsummer sabbat of witches.
