I was an avid reader (in the 1940s and early 1950s) when I was in what is called Middle School today, and this civil war series by Altsheler was available in my local library's bookmobile and I read every one of the books in these series. I tried to remember the name of the books or the author and was finally helped in this regard by a research librarian. I wanted them for my grandson, who is also an avid reader and much interested in history. The books by Altsheler are fiction (because the young protagonist is a fictional young civil war soldier) but he takes part in real battles that are historically accurate and it is obvious that the details are carefully researched. I re-read several volumes in these series before getting copies for my grandson, who is now reading them with the same fascination that I had when I was his age.

This book is another exceptional read. Even if it is fictional. It has a lot of good history in it. How was it even possible for the north to win. Loved this book as all that I've read in this series.

Great action reading with a smooth flow of events. Very good character development and

interaction with minor characters that brought all together.
