Goya's Last Portrait: The Painter Played Today, with Nella Bielski. Berger's penchant for poetic declarations, coupled with his characteristic humanism, lends his fiction a strong sense of the aphoristic and even the allegorical. Screenplays, with Alain Tanner: La Salamandre (The Salamander ), 1971, Le Milieu du monde (The Middle of the World ), 1974, and Jonas (Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000 ), 1976; Play Me Something, with Timothy Neat, 1989. Pages of the Wound: Poems, Photographs, Drawings by John Berger. London, Circle Press, 1994.

Nella Bielski's new novel will be noted for its ingenious plotting, concision of style, and use of historical scenes. This book strikes me as having been a first draft or proposal, but which somehow wound up as a finished product. But just as a life isn't a only series of discrete events but also a not completely comprehended network of perceptions, notions and emotions, this novel adds up to much more than its wonderfully handled novelistic elements. I bought the book because I was taken in by a rather ambiguous blurb - allegedly by "John LeCarre" - on the dust jacket. I should have known better.

On 5 November, John Berger will turn 90. As I travel to Paris to meet him, I carry a bagful of books. The homage continues on film in The Seasons in Quincy: Four Portraits of John Berger, shot during his late 80s – a collage of informal conversation and political discussion, with offerings by Tilda Swinton, the writer and producer Colin MacCabe and others. It was shot in the hamlet in Haute-Savoie, in the French Alps, where Berger lived for more than 40 years. It is of an ageless face and yet Melina is only 13. (Berger has three children – Katya, Jacob and Yves – and five grandchildren.
