A must read for anyone interested in systemic socioeconomic reform. The ideas here are still fresh, Freire's thinking is clear and penetrating, and both his evaluation of cultural challenges and his proposals for resolution are still profoundly relevant. Although the ideas here have the same central themes and flavor as those in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, here they are more developed, well-rounded and I found them to be more persuasive than that seminal work. For those unfamiliar with Freire, this book captures the essence of his insights; this is not about "education" per se, but about revolution and transformation into more enlightened and empowering democratic perspectives and civic structures, using a participatory, "context-aware" and culturally self-critical consciousness that allows everyone involved equal footing and inherent value.
Silly Dog
Paulo Freire's essays focused mostly on the education of rural peasants in Brazil. However, the conclusions he draws from those experiences can be applied to all forms of education everywhere. A true inspiration for what it means to educate, to teach, to liberate.

Frankly it should be required reading for all teachers and it saddens me that Freire's voice has been mostly lost to time.
