watching to future
Kevin Smith is a master of comedy. He started out strong with Clerks, had a critical misstep with Mallrats (though that film has emerged recently as a cult classic) and returned to form with Chasing Amy, a drama about a man who falls in love with a lesbian, before stirring up controversy with his epic take on religion, Dogma. But this is not a review for any of those films. It is a review for a comic book prequel to Dogma, called Chasing Dogma.

Set between the events of Chasing Amy and Dogma (both of which feature the stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob), the aforementioned duo are slumming it at the house of their friend Tish (a character from Mallrats). Fed up with their (read: Jay's) laziness, she kicks them out. After a series of unfortunate events, Jay reaches the conclusion thT everyone in their town is against them. Hensuddenly gets the idea to go to Shermer, Illinois, the town from nearly all John Hughes films, of which Silent Bob is a huge fan, in order to better their lives and make some cash selling to the students at Shermer High. The journey the duo takes is a doozy, including an encounter with Mr. Rogers and his limo driver, Doogie Houser himself Neil Patrick Harris, a porno set, and an escaped orangitan. And it all culminates at the moment the duo makes theirnon-screen appearance in Dogma.

While the comic was funny and entertaining, there are some downs. Nearly an entire quarter of the comic that features the orangutan, was almost verbatum copied into the film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Unfortunately, it was funnier on screen and here just seems to be a rehash of those events.

But this is a very fun comic. The characters Jay and Silent Bob are fleshed out very well and there are a host of cameos from notable characters from the films. Any true Kevin Smith fan would be remiss not to own this. Unfortunately, theres not much here for the uninitiated.

What happened to Jay and Silent Bob between "Chasing Amy" and "Dogma"? How did Jay get the idea of going to Shermer, Illinois? Where did he get that hat? And why were they hanging out in the parking lot of a birth control clinic?
This book WILL answer those questions...and make you laugh out loud in the process!

A fun bridge between Chasing Amy and Dogma.

I absolutely loved these stories and how they connect the dots between the two films. A lot of the things used in these stories are seen in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. When Jay and Silent Bob meet Suzanne the Orangutan in the comics, it plays just like the scene from the movie when they meet Suzanne, even the scenes of Jay's grim look into the future Planet of the Apes. There is another scene in here that was cut from J&SB strike back when they are kicked off the bus for smoking weed in the restroom on the bus.

What I love most about these stories is that it explains how Jay and Silent Bob ended up wearing the different clothes that they wear in Dogma. That was the coolest part of this, everthing about their clothes in Dogma is explained in these stories; from Jay's Forked Tongue T-Shirt to Silent Bob's Mooby's cap. Overall, these stories are a must have for any fan of Kevin Smith. They are funny and should be included as canon (except for the monkey scene that was later used in J/SB Strike Back). If you want to know what happened to the dynamic duo between films, get this
Really gives you a better idea about Jay and his hetero lifemate, Silent Bob. Porn stars, The Fugitive and even Mr. Rogers make appearances. This series of comic books (four issues in this book) gives you the lowdown of J&SBs adventures from their scene in the Diner in "Chasing Amy" up until their grand appearance in "Dogma." Well drawn and exceptional stories make this a must for View Askew fanboys. Wanna know more about Suzanne, the monkey at the end of Mallrats? Wanna know how Jay and Silent Bob made it to Illinois? Wanna know what happened to Trish the Dish after Mallrats? All is explained right here. If you enjoy this book, also check out Clerks: The Comics by Kev Smith too.
